Eartheseed Black Arts Alliance and Walk the Talk have come together to create a public altar that seeks to create a focal point for honoring the intersectional struggle for liberation and well-being by the marginalized communities of Santa Fe.

The altar will be unveiled on 9/22 and on exhibition through May 2021 at Railyard Park in O’Gah Po’Geh (Santa Fe) New Mexico. We need your help in order to build the altar and make this sacred space available. Your donation would be greatly appreciated and the money will go towards the cost of materials that are used for building the altar.

Developed by a multi-cultural cohort of artists, the altar will be an offering to the entire Santa Fe community, but specifically rooted in the communities and lineages held by the creative cohort, comprising members of the Indigenous, Mestize/Chicane, and Black communities, among others.

This project is directly inspired by and connected to the current Civil Rights movement that began with the murder of George Floyd and has spread to across the country and the globe.

As citizens of New Mexico, we know intimately the specific struggle to find a balanced and equitable society among the various communities that make up this state. Our mission for this project is to serve as a spiritual and aesthetic beacon for healing at the intersection of the movement for Black lives, the fight for Indigenous liberation, and the safety and well-being of the Latine/Chicane community. We also know the sensitivities and risks around cultural expression, appropriation, and erasure - especially in Santa Fe. Our cohort is committed to diligently interrogating our own biases and assumptions to ensure respectful and authentic engagement with the cultural context of
this town.

The mixed-media altar will be a free-standing structure designed to hold and portray offerings. It will serve as a hosting place for individual ritual and performance actions conducted by the creative cohort, and hopes to also be an anchoring point for community oriented workshops and social actions.
