This is the second mural I’ve created with this shelter network, and I’m very grateful to be working alongside fellow artist Jonelle Justina and the women residents. Over the past few weeks, we’ve been gathering together to draw, share stories, and come up with ideas for a new mural that will brighten the shelter and honor the community’s spirit. Our design proposal sketched by Jonelle (the image above is an indicative mock up in the space) is deeply inspired by these sessions: on the left, women are gathered in collective rest beneath a structure that acknowledges the Lenape land through decorative symbols, surrounded by the Inwood forest. On the right, the woods transform into a goddess, who gently sends the Birdwomen on their way.
This project is truly a collective effort. The funds we raise will go toward fresh paint cans, brushes, rollers, and two drop cloths. Every dollar helps us create a space that feels welcoming and empowering for the women who call the shelter home.
To sit and draw with the women has been incredibly inspiring and life-affirming. We all look forward to coming together in this time and creating something meaningful and beautiful. Our dedicated group of residents is so excited for this to happen and can’t wait to get started. Thank you for considering supporting our mural project and helping us make a lasting impact in our community : )
