Hello!
My name is Colin Kim of Troop 1195 in Manassas, VA. I am raising funds for my Eagle Project, which is an effort to preserve the Deep Cut Loop Trail at the Manassas National Battlefield Park.
According to the Tripadvisor.com:
During the Second Battle of Manassas, General John Pope ordered the Union’s largest attack of the battle. He asked Fitz John Porter and his division to attack General Stonewall Jackson’s Confederates who had taken a defensive position along an incomplete railroad bed that had been dug along some high ground which became known as the Deep Cut.
Under withering musket fire and shelling, Porter’s men, sustaining heavy casualties, somehow made it uphill, over an open field, to the opposite side of the deep cut where intense close quarters fighting occurred. With the two lines only separated by the Deep Cut, a few feet from each other, the intensity of the fighting led to probably the most famous aspect of the battle. At one point, the Confederates temporarily ran out of ammunition and began throwing rocks at the Union troops who, in the confusion, began picking them up and throwing them back at the Confederates.
Despite the heroism shown by Porter’s men, and Stonewell’s men wavering at one point, the attack ultimately failed.
My project is to build a 40-ft wooden boardwalk, which is a component of a large building project done by several other aspiring Eagle Scout candidates. The project will help preserve the history of the trail and I need your help to purchase the materials needed.
Thank you for your contributions toward this great cause.
Sincerely,
Colin Kim
