Cold Spring Park Wayfinding Posts Eagle Project

Hi, my name is Owen Serra and I am a member of BSA troop 209 in Newton, MA. I am currently pursuing the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest rank in Scouting. Eagle Scouts are best known for leading a public service project to give back to their community.

For my project I am working with the nonprofit Friends of Cold Spring Park to install nine wayfinding posts at key trail intersections. Each post includes one or more signs to help visitors navigate the park. The current lack of navigation aids prevents some visitors from fully enjoying this park. Without appropriate signage, visitors can take a wrong turn, miss a feature they hope to see, or even delay the arrival of help during an emergency.

This project looks to address these needs by pointing visitors to key landmarks such as the dog park, entrances, and parking. Visitors can access additional information via a QR code that takes the user to a digital map of the park. Additionally, each sign has a unique code that can be shared with 9-1-1 to help determine the callers exact location in the event of an emergency.

Almost all work will be done by volunteers that I am recruiting, or by the City of Newton employees who have graciously offered to dig the post holes.

All funds raised through this campaign will be used to purchase project materials including lumber, custom signs, gravel, and hardware. Any donations received above the cost of this project will be gifted to the Friends of Cold Spring Park who will use these funds for other park improvements.
