To my curl fam —

My name is Roxy Reaves and I am the founder + lead stylist of Coastal Curl, a salon brand dedicated to empowering and embracing natural hair textures for all. My teammate Rocio and I are proud to serve our diverse community and have been lucky to receive so much praise and love from you all! We are starting this campaign because we urgently need your help to protect our little Oakland self-care oasis. We have recently fallen on some hard times, but are hoping to come out of some this hardship stronger than ever.

On 2/3/23 and again on 2/25/23, Coastal Curl was robbed and vandalized by organized thieves. In the first instance, the salon was one of multiple businesses in the same building that had their glass doors smashed and their things stolen or thrown on to the floor. In the most recent robbery, which happened just this past Saturday, we believe the same thieves returned for a more significant and targeted heist of just our salon. They stole all of the cash from our register (over $1500 worth of wages & tips), hair products, as well as all of our technology and tools (a DSLR camera, multiple sets of professional grade japanese steel shears, Babyliss barbering clippers + trimmers, dyson hair dryers, hot tools, an iPad, combs, and the list goes on).

We're currently seeking to raise around $8,500 recuperate losses, pay repair fees, improve our salon security, technology, as well as expand our team/hours of operation. Without help, we'll likely be closed for the next few week(s) as we find a way to recover the tools & supplies. With your support, we’re looking to expedite the recovery and invest in better security measures to make our salon feel even more welcoming and safe for everyone. We also hope to replace our stolen hardware and upgrade our software to streamline our booking process and ensure a smoother salon experience for all.

Funds will be used to subsidize:

- An on-site safe for our tools & supplies ($900)

- New lockable cabinets ($200 x2)

- A new, more secure cash register ($100)

- Steel outdoor rolling shutters ($1200)

- Security cameras, alarms, and monitoring ($400)

- Replacements for tools & cash stolen during break-ins ($2000)

- Repair costs for the glass & a better door lock ($1200)

- New tech: digital camera for after photos, iPad for payments ($1500)

- Hiring & training of new staff members with expanded hours ($1000)

Additionally, we're excited to expand our team & hours/availability with talented new stylists and support staff, but require additional funds to make that happen. We hope this will also make our salon feel safer by having more team members present in the space together at the same time. Our mission is to continue creating a warm and inclusive space that celebrates natural hair, and we can't do it without your help.
