This is the official GoFundMe for the Clarkson & Lorne Park Coalition of Concerned Citizens.
A group of local businesses and community members has formed the Clarkson & Lorne Park Coalition of Concerned Citizens. In an effort to protect the community’s interest, the Coalition has engaged a lawyer at their own expense to formally oppose the project through all available avenues, including through appeals to local elected officials and the City of Mississauga. To-date the Coalition’s representation has written and sent two legal letters outlining the community’s objections and concerns, one of which has resulted in open debate at the City Council, with additional work and follow up underway. Your donations will go to furthering the efforts of this Coalition, and primarily to covering the costs of further legal expenses.
*** BACKSTORY ***
There is a Supportive Housing Project proposed for 1639 Lakeshore Road West, which 'tenant mix' has raised community safety and protection concerns.
It is the goal of the Clarkson & Lorne Park Coalition is to ensure the safety and protection of the community, especially in light of the presence of a significant number of nearby schools, daycares, children, elderly individuals, and other support shelters, necessitates our active participation in a robust discourse concerning the legal and policy ramifications of governmental actions. This is particularly crucial when public funds are allocated for the support of Housing Initiatives. The petition at the last count mounted to over 2,300 individuals and continues to increase as more and more residents and community members understand the reality of how the government’s decision will impact our community, and to urge for a reconsideration of the ‘tenant mix’ at this proposed Supportive Housing Project planned for the Clarkson / Lorne Park community.
At the December 13, 2023 community meeting, current Supportive Housing residents spoke out about the serious emergency issues, drug use and thefts that have been reported at other sites owned and managed by the same builder. It was discovered that the proposed Supportive Housing Project at 1639 Lakeshore Road West would have the same tenant mix, which could be a serious safety and protection risk to the community.
The ability to mount an effective opposition to a government decision which threatens the protection and safety of our community requires not only the engagement of the community in that debate, but also the financial means for the engagement of essential expenses (including subject matter experts) that may be incurred to advance the Coalition’s objectives and to enable the Coalition to retain legal advisors who can effectively advocate on our behalf with the government officials and, if necessary, the courts.
In our pursuit of a strong opposition, we are seeking contributions to establish a legal defense fund. Your support is crucial in order to enable the community to confront and persuade the government to reconsider its decision; to move forward in a manner that will respect and address the community’s safety and protection concerns, ensuring a comprehensive and responsible resolution.
Your contribution, which will be utilized with the highest standards of fiscal responsibility, helps the Coalition navigate the obstacles before us to persuade the government to rethink and redefine Affordable Supportive Housing, in a manner consistent with the protection and safety of our community and the most vulnerable members of our community.
