I’m not trying to start anything political. I just want to share some concerns for families who rely on SNAP benefits. My sister and her family in Kentucky depend heavily on food stamps each month. She’s not abusing the system, as some might assume, but truly needs the help.
A bit of backstory: her husband has been disabled for many years and receives disability each month, which covers most of their basic needs. My sister was injured on the job several years ago and received a settlement that she managed wisely, stretching it for years. Unfortunately, that money ran out about 14 months ago.
Since then, she has been actively searching for work, but with no luck. She still struggles daily with her injury, which includes a frozen shoulder and a large hump at the top of it. Several doctors have said there’s nothing more they can do. She has been labeled as disabled but doesn’t qualify for disability benefits because she doesn’t have enough work credits after spending years as a stay-at-home mom.
For the past year or so, Lee and I have been blessed to help with groceries and a few of their smaller bills each month, but I won’t be able to cover all of her groceries this month. I’m also helping Sandy with groceries right now, as her benefits will also be missing or delayed.
If anyone is able or willing to help, no matter the amount, it would mean so much. My sister doesn’t know I’m posting this, but I felt led to reach out. She has been to a few food banks in her area, but they haven’t had much to give lately.
I’ll be placing a Walmart delivery for her this weekend regardless, but any extra help would go directly toward easing her stress and putting food on the table.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for reading and prayers would be appreciated.
