Climbing Kilimanjaro in Memory of Loved Ones
Hi, my name is Millie Thomas, and on the 14th of July, I’m taking on the incredible challenge of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in loving memory of two remarkable women: Ellie Dickinson, my dear friend who sadly passed in April 2024, and Marta Malczyk, my best friend’s mum, who lost her battle with cancer in December 2023.
Both Ellie and Marta showed extraordinary bravery and strength throughout their journeys. Their kindness, courage, and resilience continue to inspire me every single day.
Together with my two amazing friends, Jakob Wall and Megan Lynch, we’ll be taking on the Lemosho Route — an 8-day trek to the summit of Kilimanjaro, standing at a breathtaking 5,895 metres. It’s the tallest free-standing mountain in the world.
Marta had a deep love for hiking, and this challenge means so much to me — and to her memory. It will be a true honour to spread her ashes at the summit, allowing her to complete one more hike in spirit.
Ellie had the most beautiful soul. She was passionate about helping others, shown through her work as a police officer, and she loved to travel and explore new places. Her sheer determination and strength throughout her four-year fight with cancer were nothing short of inspiring. I feel immense pride knowing I’ll be taking her with me on this journey — and spreading her ashes at the summit so she can tick off one more country and one more mountain.
I’m doing this to raise funds for St Leonard’s Hospice – a place that provides exceptional care, comfort, and dignity to patients and their families during the most difficult times. The hospice was an incredible support to both Ellie and Marta during their palliative care, and now I want to give something back in their honour.
Climbing Kilimanjaro will be one of the biggest challenges of my life — but it’s nothing compared to what so many families face.
Every donation, no matter how big or small, will go directly to supporting the hospice and helping them continue their vital work.
Thank you so much for your kindness, support, and generosity.
