Kasiya Secondary School in rural Malawi is facing a critical challenge: the water available to students and staff is contaminated by rutile, making it unsafe for drinking, hygiene, and daily use. As a former Peace Corps volunteer in this village, I witnessed firsthand the impact that unsafe water has on the health, attendance, and well-being of over 300 students and staff. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, I had to leave Malawi before I could start this vital water project. Although I eventually secured funding, the project was cancelled after my departure. Now, I am working directly with the school to ensure this project can still become a reality, even after I am gone.

The goal of this project is to install a sustainable water treatment system that will provide clean, safe, and reliable water for the entire school community. This will not only improve water quality and reduce waterborne illnesses, but also promote better hygiene practices and support higher school attendance. The project is truly community-driven: parents, teachers, students, and local leaders identified the water crisis as a top priority and co-designed the solution through inclusive planning meetings. The community has pledged to contribute local materials, labor, and up to 25% of the total cost, showing their commitment to long-term success. Sustainability measures include a dedicated Water Management Committee, school budget allocations for upkeep, and annual water quality testing. Technical and financial trainings will equip community members with the skills needed for ongoing maintenance and resilience.
