The lack of access to clean water in Nigeria is particularly worrying, with 26.5 million Nigerian children experiencing high or extremely high water vulnerability – or 29 per cent of Nigerian children.
Hi! I'm Ian, raising money to supply clean water to about 250 families of 3 to 5 people per family and about 600 children in a community in Imilike Ubogidi Edem-Ani, Nsukka LGA of Enugu State in South-Eastern Nigeria.
The families currently travel approximately one and a half kilometers to get water from a muddy stream. They have to wait many hours for their turn before fetching water. During the dry season, people leave their house by 3-4 am to make sure they come back before 8 or 9 am. With the borehole they will get clean water when needed without queueing.
The water table in the area is very deep, so hand pumps won't work. Instead, we need a submersible pump, and drilling the deep borehole is expensive. We've already completed a detailed survey, and the borehole will be 207m (680ft) deep. The competitive quote we've received for the borehole and pump is $10,000. We'll also need to build a stand and set up 3 tanks to store the water and provide access to 3 families at a time. We’ll also need to ensure that any required maintenance is completed promptly.
