Hi Everyone!
Ella, Lauren and Jessie here.
As some of you may know, we have spent the past six weeks in Arusha, Tanzania. During our time here, we met many incredible people, many of whom face daily challenges in accessing something most of us take for granted: clean, safe drinking water.
We visited a town called Maji Ya Chai, which translates to “tea water.” The name comes from the discoloured water the community depends on for daily use. This water is not only visibly unclean but also contains dangerously high levels of fluoride and harmful bacteria.
While fluoride can be beneficial in small amounts, the water in Maji Ya Chai contains fluoride levels five times higher than what is considered safe. This leads to irreversible harm, including damage to teeth and bones and long-term developmental impacts. In addition to this, many students miss significant time at school due to typhoid, a water-borne disease. These absences cause students to fall behind in their learning, often making it difficult for them to catch up.
Tuvaila Primary School is located in the Maji Ya Chai Ward and is the largest school in the area, with 1,280 students from kindergarten through to Year Seven, including 80 students with special needs who live on campus. The students shared that each day whole classes spend hours away from school collecting water for drinking and cooking. These students understand how harmful this water is for them, but they have no other option.
We have been lucky to volunteer with Mizizi Ya Mafanikio, a UK-registered NGO that supports clean water initiatives.
Mizizi has partnered with Nanofilter, a Tanzanian owned and operated business that supplies affordable, accessible and sustainable water filters to communities in Tanzania. The Nanofilter is a 3-part filtration system that removes bacteria, microorganisms and lowers fluoride to a safe level.
Clean water is a right not a privilege.
We are raising money to fund a 2000 litre water filter for Tuvaila Primary School. This filter will provide safe drinking water for the 1,280 students, their families, teachers, and the wider community, while also giving students back valuable learning time.
Every dollar raised will go directly towards funding this water filter. Any contribution, no matter how small, will make a meaningful difference.
With all our love and gratitude,
Ella, Lauren and Jessie
