GOVERNANCE: every Euro/Dollar will be accounted for and donors will receive regular updates. Justus, the founder of OKKS Water Project, will oversee implementation, and Daniela, international independent expert and former IAEA Africa desk officer, will oversee fundraising and ensure project governance.
Makueny County is situated in an arid and semi-arid area in Kenya. The population is facing significant challenges in ensuring daily fresh water, which often is a life-threatening struggle. Diseases due to dirty, unfiltered water as well as inefficiency, scarcity, economic and social-economic challenges are affecting the daily life of rural Muketani Mavindu.
The OKKS Water Project resolves to provide modern water wells for this hard-working community. They are more than grateful to all their donors and ready to start the work whenever the first funds are available. The work will be adjusted and segmented according to the available funds and you, respected donors, will be periodically updated. It goes without saying that everybody is welcomed to visit the site at all times. It will be a great honour for the community to host you, and rest assured that you will receive a warm welcome together with a glass of cold, fresh water that you helped make accessible.
The project implementation will be coordinated by Justus, an Energy Physicist working for the Kenyan Nuclear Regulatory Authority and founder of the OKKS Water Project in 2016. As a proof of the project’s feasibility, the first well is already fully operational (commissioned and sponsored in full by NGO-PAN Austria, https://www.pan-austria.org/pan-wasserprojekt/
The building of the first well was successfully completed in part also due to the extraordinary involvement of the local community, who helped keep the costs at an absolute minimum. Justus coordinated the whole project perfectly while also going beyond the project coordination and doing the needed construction work when free from his daily job.
I am Daniela Caratas, and I will be in charge with project fundraising and governance. I met Justus during one of my many assignments as an IAEA Africa desk officer. Knowing my strong involvement with Africa and dedication in making a difference in this mesmerizing continent, Justus decided to contact me in Vienna and ask for my help and support. Trusting him through his hard work within my IAEA regional projects and being moved by his decision to pay back the efforts of his community in supporting him during the studies, I decided to get fully involved and this how this story got inspired.
I thank you all in advance for your kind support. We will report to you periodically about the progress of building the well. Every contribution counts and is a beacon of hope for this life-challenged community.
Please note that all funds, except GoFundMe commission go to the project, there is no admin head, no overhead.
Cost Overview:
Materials – € 2.250, out of which
a. € 960 for cement, sand, concrete, waterproof cement
b. € 1.100 for metal rods and rolls, timber/wood, foot pump, pipes, water tanks, plywood
c. € 190 for binding wire, nails, miscellaneous
Labour - € 900, out of which
d. € 245 for well digging
e. € 240 for transportation
f. € 155 skilled labour and curing
g. € 240 structural designing, monitoring/oversight by a specialized firm
h. € 20 miscellaneous
