Hello! My name is Clara Machado. I am 16 years old and am currently a sophomore at Northern Valley Regional High School. My father is from Quito, Ecuador. While I have never lived there, I have visited numerous times and it holds a special place in my heart. There are many poor an indigenous families in rural areas throughout Ecuador whom have much lower access to health services. I have chosen to partner with the Hospitality Center of the SOLCA cancer hospital in Quito, Ecuador to try an help make a difference for individuals whom are going thru chemotherapy and don't have the means to pay for accommodations while undergoing treatment.
The Hospitality Center of SOLCA opened it’s doors in July 2023. It aims to provide safe, comfortable and welcoming accommodations for hospitalized patients and their families who travel from the provinces to receive medical treatments and do not have the financial resources to pay for their stay in another place. The Hospitality Center strives to offer an environment that provides emotional support, practical facilities and a positive experience during their stay. The Hospitality Center currently has 9 rooms with private bathrooms with 2 beds in each room. It is very similar to the Ronald McDonald House Charities found here in the USA. The services that guests receive at the Center are:
-Shower with hot water
-Dining room: 3 meals per day
-Cable TV
-Wifi
-Laundry:washer/dryer
-Rest and entertainment room
-Children’s and multipurpose room
-Playground
-Personal hygiene supplies, clothing, shoes, toys, etc.
I am organizing and leading a project to secure donations in the hopes of helping the center being able to expand and build an additional 4 rooms. I am very excited to give back to my Ecuadorian heritage. All funds will go directly to support the completion this project.
