My name is Charles Jackson, and I am the owner, editor, and publisher of City Pride Magazine and the Hub City Reporter. I started City Pride Magazine in 2006 in Carson, California. After working with Hub City News as a photographer, writer, and advertising salesperson, I decided to launch my publication. I was inspired to create a magazine showcasing the vibrant community I lived in, featuring vivid images captured at various events, including parades, concerts, school events, and church activities.
The pastor of City of Truth Ministries generously took me in and allowed me to start my publication in the church office and classroom. He even purchased a camera for me, and I was able to use the computers at the church to create my magazine. In return for their support, I helped the church establish an outreach program and taught them how to provide better services to the community. Together, we initiated a youth job program, youth counseling, community cultural activities, music programs, gang intervention initiatives, and food distribution for needy families—all of which strengthened the church's role in the community.
Eventually, I was able to move the publication out of the church in Carson, expanding its reach to cities such as Compton, South Central Los Angeles, Inglewood, Long Beach, Pomona, and Fontana. For nearly 20 years, we have been dedicated to providing vital information about schools, churches, municipalities, and community service organizations. Our coverage includes a range of topics, such as education, health, safety, financial issues, and spiritual concerns.
We have also focused on engaging young people by educating and training them in media and communications. Our goal is to inspire more inner-city youth and adults to get involved in photography, writing, digital design, filmmaking, reporting, and various other skills within the media field. We aim to prepare our community for the growing opportunities in the media and communication industry, particularly in the context of the expanding sports and entertainment complex in Los Angeles and Southern California. We aim to equip our community for careers and job opportunities related to the 2028 LA Olympics.
We now have a building that we plan to use as a newsroom and training center to develop stories and create content. We will also use the center as a multi-purpose community center for entertainment, plays, film screening, photo studio, dance center, community engagement, rehearsal space, and many other media-related activities. We need help getting started and making this a self-sustaining media activity center.
