The volunteer committee, Concerned Citizens Committee to Protect Lake Placid ( Facebook ) needs funds to stop a local propane company from installing the first of several 36,000 gallon propane storage tanks in an historically significant, residential area at 132 Old Military Road in Lake Placid New York.
The proposed site is at a particularly dangerous section of the narrow highway with limited site distances in both directions. Although rare, the potential for a catastrophic propane incident exists and a serious traffic accident is likely. The risks of the proposed site include injury, fatality and permanent destruction of property over a wide area which includes a senior living facility, hospital/ER, elementary school and hundreds of local businesses and residences.
We are in urgent need of donations to help increase public awareness about the negative impacts of this ill-advised proposal. To-date, the cost of newspaper ads has been paid by a generous donor. We anticipate significant legal expenses as we present our case to the local zoning board and ultimately to the courts should an appeal becoming necessary.
The only beneficiary of the proposed site is the applicant (owner of Hurley Brothers Inc,) who is the chairman of the Joint Review Board that will determine if the application is permitted to move forward. Nearby residents will have their properties permanently devalued. Anyone living in or visiting Lake Placid will be put in harm’s way.
IMPORTANT: Please give what you can. No donation is too small. All donations will be used for expenses directly related to defeating the propane storage and transfer facility application. For more information visit: Stop The Tank.
