Ciara & Ben: IVF journey to baby Ragains

Ciara and I found out we were pregnant at the end of 2019. A few days into 2020 while at work, Ciara (who is a Labor and Delivery nurse) went to the emergency room, in extreme pain. When I arrived, she was in severe pain and sweating profusely and it appeared that her health was declining. She was diagnosed with an ectopic pregnancy that had ruptured and she was internally bleeding. She had surgery to have her right Fallopian tube removed and made a full recovery after 4-6 weeks. During this time, we were told we should possibly be able to have children but that we should wait 3-6 months before trying again.
In September of 2020, we had another pregnancy that unfortunately resulted in a miscarriage. We then became pregnant again in February 2021 but had another miscarriage. These losses have been heartbreaking for us. We received the diagnosis of recurrent pregnancy loss and with this diagnosis and history of an ectopic pregnancy we chose to seek help from a Reproductive Endocrinologist who recommended we do In-Vitro Fertilization. This next chapter of our journey is starting in May 2021.
I can’t help but think that we were placed in this position to be able to be a voice for those other couples who also experience issues getting pregnant, losing pregnancies and having miscarriages. Ciara is finishing her Masters Degree in Nursing and through this experience will be able to relate to other women in a personalized way, to be someone whom they can turn to in time of need.
Since nearly all medical insurance providers do not cover IVF, we (like most) are having to pay out of pocket for the process. We are praying and hoping to be able to have a healthy child of our own to care for and nurture.
