Help Us Start A Family
All,
We are Kevin and Kelli Colwell, of Columbus, OH, and we recently suffered the devastating loss of our dear, sweet baby boy, Kaden Alexander Colwell, as he was delivered still-born at 11:08 am Sunday, 10 November 2019. Kaden weighed 4 lbs. 5 oz. and was 18” long.
Kelli was 32 weeks pregnant as of Friday November 8th, and had just had her most recent checkup two days before on that Wednesday . Everything was perfect. However, during the day that Friday Kaden stopped moving and kicking. We rushed to the Emergency Room at the hospital where Kelli was due to deliver Kaden on January 3rd, only to learn the devastating news that our precious baby boy had already passed away.
We remained in the hospital while they worked to induce Kelli into labor. Kaden arrived perfect and beautiful, but with some apparent damage to his umbilical cord, which in medical terms is known as a “cord incident.” This likely caused a lack of blood supply, oxygen and other nutrients necessary for life, and Kaden passed in-utero.
We are beyond devastated, especially after over two years of trying, and four previously unsuccessful IVF attempts. This was our fifth, and final, embryo, and we were anxiously awaiting Kaden’s early January due date with great anticipation and excitement.
As our IVF journey was not deemed “medically necessary,” we have spent over $30,000 cash so far, only to suffer this fifth, and most devastating, loss 7 months into an otherwise perfect and uneventful pregnancy.
Now we are left facing medical bills, cremation expenses, a memorial service for Kaden, and need to come up with at least $18,000 just to begin at ground zero all over again. It will cost approximately $15,000 for the procedure to harvest and fertilize a new batch of eggs from Kelli, and then approximately $3,000 per procedure to implant a fertilized embryo in an attempt to become pregnant again.
To top it all off, Kevin is in the middle of the long, frustrating process of being medically retired from a nearly 30 year career in the military, with over 28 of those years in US Army Special Forces as a “Green Beret.” Kevin was Wounded In Action In Afghanistan in 2009 when an RPG struck his vehicle, and has been decorated for Valor and received a Purple Heart.
With Kevin’s impending retirement, we do not know yet what our finances will look like, and the timing was so perfect for Kaden to arrive in January prior to his retirement.
We cannot - WILL NOT - give up on our dreams of starting a family together, but we need your help to continue on this journey. Please help us!
Signed,
Devastated in Columbus
