Chris's Independent Living Fund
Donation protected
Hi,
Emma and I are separated and have been living in the same family home separately for the last few years. By mutual agreement I am moving out (2025). It is likely that independent living with home help provided by 2 Personal Assistants is appropriate as I have a physical disability but need to live independently.
Emma and I will have to sell the family home in 2025. the only reason we have been able to stay here is with family help with the mortgage. If Emma and the kids buy a smaller family home, they can only afford this with my continued stake in a family home, legally secured and a legacy for my children. I would still be involved in day-to-day life, but live separately.
I was diagnosed with a neurological condition in 2021 which effect my eyes (I am legally blind) and well as balance, speech and coordination. Following a series of tests, I had to stop work in 2023, this has significantly changed my life. I can no longer drive and many of the things I love to do outdoors I am no longer able to do.
Emma and I have 2 children who are both of school age. Both have been significantly effected by these changes, We are committed to being a nurturing family despite other challenges.
I am currently claiming a number of unemployment and disability benefits. I receive funding from social services which pays for home help.
I am pretty good at accessing state funding where possible, however there are a number of things not eligible.
These include:
- Legal costs not covered under legal aid E.g. wills and lasting power of attorney. Approx costs may be between £1500-2000
- Potential start-up costs not covered under grants, like buying white goods or household items.
- I plan for £3000 of the funds to go towards half of the rent for 6 months for accommodation on a temporary basis until I find a more long term sustainable and affordable home.
Hence the need to raise funds.
Thank you so much for your support, it makes a real difference.
Any surplus or money not used will be donated to Woodlarks campsite for disabled people https://woodlarks.org.uk/ that I discovered last year and attend regularly for respite. They do amazing work.
