HELP US TO GIVE A FUTURE TO A HOMELESS MOTHER AND HER DAUGHTER

The challenges of these two women

We arrive to downtown Lima, the capital of Peru, by 5am, where it is very common to see homeless people around. Among them we bumped into two women sitting on a bench on the main square. Maria, aged 60 was asleep whereas her daughter Veronica, aged 31 kept vigilant before any potential sexual assault, or robbery.

As we approached them, they were very suspicious, as they did not want to be photographed. Reportedly, few organisations and people and promised them help which never materialised.

María does not have a home and does little jobs to earn a living. For years her big challenge has been to secure a place to crash at night. Somehow though, by selling sweets, knitting and handcrafts she managed to support her daughter to finish the secondary school and keep her relatively safe in the streets.

She used to work as a housemaid where shelter was provided for herself and her daughter and would also go to different shelters. Unfortunately, they do not qualify now for the latter and could not find a job as a maid anymore in a highly competitive labour market, as they both now look ill and dishevelled.

They both have been rough sleepers for over six years. Maria has kidney problems and her legs are swollen, whereas Veronica suffers from anaemia.

Objective: Rehome mother and daughter by providing them with safe accommodation and the opportunity go generate their own income.

Short-term goal: Funding seed, training, room rental for 6 months.

Long-term goal: economic independence, emotional stability, social rehabilitation.

EL DESAFÍO QUE ENFRENTAN ESTAS MUJERES

Son las 5 a. m. llegamos al Centro de Lima - capital del Perú donde es común encontrar a muchas personas indigentes, y entre ellos encontramos a dos mujeres sentadas en un banco. María de 60 años dormía, mientas su hija Verónica de 31 años se mantenía despierta para vigilar, así se turnan para estar atentas ante cualquier circunstancia peligrosa como robo, o ultrajo.

Cuando nos acercamos, mostraron desconfianza de nosotras, no deseaban se les tomen fotos, refieren muchas instituciones y personas se acercan y nunca reciben apoyo.

María no ha tenido suerte de tener un techo propio, trabaja en todo lo que pueda para sobrevivir, su desafío por años era lograr dormir bajo techo. Se las ingenió para que su hija esté a salvo y terminara su secundaria, y lo logró vendiendo dulces, haciendo trenzas, o tejiendo pulseras. Cuenta que ha trabajado haciendo limpieza en casas y así dormía con su hija en esa casa, luego vivió en albergues, pero ya no las aceptan.

Hace 6 años duermen en calle, María siente que su cuerpo ya no da más, sus riñones están dañadas, sus piernas hinchadas; Verónica tiene mucha dejadez, sueño y no tiene fuerzas, aparenta por su semblante tener anemia.

TU AYUDA PUEDE CAMBIAR DOS VIDAS

Objetivo: Sacar a madre e hija de la calle, darles un techo y una oportunidad de trabajo.

Meta a corto plazo: Entrega capital semilla, capacitación, alquilar cuarto por 6 meses.

Meta a largo plazo: Independencia económica, estabilidad emocional, integración social.
