Toby and Chloe are expecting their first child in January. At only 20 the young tradesmen is staying positive, hoping he can still be the hands-on dad he wants to be, after losing the ability to walk after suffering suffering serious injuries from a fall at work.
Toby was working away from home in Cobram, Victoria, painting a roof of a farm shed when he fell backwards through a fiberglass skylight he fell six metres on to a steel rail before hitting the concrete floor, fracturing three vertebrae in his back and one in his neck. He also suffered broken ribs, a punctured lung and laceration to his spleen.
The accident has meant that Toby is now classified as an incomplete paraplegic.
Fortunately Toby has upper body movement although the family have been told he will be in a wheelchair for a long time to come.
His partner Chloe has left work to be by his side, unsure what the repercussions of his accident will be.
The young parents-to-be remain hopeful and are focused on providing for their baby which is due to arrive in January next year.
The Hammond families have been involved in the Pambula Panthers Football Club for many decades so the club has decided to start the Chloe and Toby Nursery Project hoping to raise enough money to build an accessible nursery for Toby and Chloe and their newborn.
The accessible nursery will allow Toby to be involved in the daily routine of caring for a new baby such as changing nappies and bath time all important things when a father is bonding with his new addition to the family.
We are looking to buy things that are user friendly for the nursery such as a wheelchair accessible crib, an adjustable change table – things like that.
Thank you for your support and making a difference to Toby & Chloe's future.
