In 2004, Dale Chihuly’s exhibition, "A Celebration in Glass," drew visitors from across the region to the Reading Public Museum. Inspired, members of the Reading community collectively commissioned "Fountain Spray" —a group of luminous glass spirals that would rise from the water in the 2nd floor fountain, surrounding the beloved "Drinking Girl" bronze statue. About a decade later, following many leaks and unsuccessful repairs, the decision was made to remove the fountain for the greater safety of The Museum's collection. After disassembly, the Chihuly tendrils that had been custom made to sit in the fountain were stored in museum vaults, and have remained there ever since.
We now propose to give them new life as part of a bold, signature Chihuly chandelier suspended above The Museum's Atrium. The Dale Chihuly Studio will add new blown-glass elements, design and fabricate the steel armature, and complete full installation. The total cost is $250,000.
With 100% of The Foundation’s Board of Directors contributing, along with many other individual donors, we have already raised $200,000. Now, we welcome the community to play a part in realizing this exciting project as we raise the final $50,000.
This chandelier becomes our beacon: fresh, forward, and welcoming with open arms everyone who steps inside The Museum. The Reading community—school children, families, newcomers—enter and immediately look up in awe. The gleaming tendrils catch light, attention, and imagination, preparing all for the wonders of art, culture, and science that await within The Museum. The chandelier won’t hang just for a season, nor for a set exhibition period. Instead, it will indefinitely grace The Museum Atrium with tendrils shining.
Donors of $250 or more will qualify to be named on a credit plaque displayed near the new chandelier.
