Charlie Carter Memorial Fund for Young Irelands

9th Feb 2010 will forever be a day etched in my memory...the day my Dad, Charlie, was taken way too soon from us at the age of 60. Not a day goes by when we don’t think about him...a mix of sadness, bitterness & happiness. As someone wise once told me, you will never get over it but learn to deal with it day to by day. One of the coping mechanisms for me has been running...a way to escape, a way to clear the mind, a way to honour Dad. Having done 6 marathons over the past few years, I am setting out in the next 6 months to complete a sub 3 hour marathon (27th October in Lausanne) and my longest ultra marathon - 80km (9th November in Madrid). 9th November is important as it is the day that Dad would have turned 70. As part of that, I want to honour Dad by raising funds for Young Irelands GAA juvenile section. Dad gave much of his life dedicated to the club from playing, to administration through to being involved in coaching/selecting on teams. I absolutely idolised Dad and spent every minute I could with him. The pictures here capture some of that from putting up the scoreboard in the local pitch to winning a county final alongside Dad when he was 47 years of age & I was 16 (he came on & scored a point...more than me as he kept reminding me afterwards...my brother Martin was also on the field that day so winning was particularly special) to when I graduated from UCD.  Within the extended family, we have lost great men like my uncles - Jim Carter & Jim Fitzgerald, who also gave a lifetime of service to the club & community as well as my uncle John Murphy who was taken too early from us. Most importantly,  there are grandnieces, grandnephews, nieces & nephews, grandson (also Charlie) & granddaughters, sons & daughters still heavily involved in keeping this great club going...all money raised will be towards paying for equipment for the young kids who will be the future of the club. As well as seeing me go through some pain over the next 6 months, your donation will go directly towards a community that is making a difference, keeping kids active & social...please support as much as you can. You can do that via this link and I will continue to keep you updated on the training progress.
