Hi everyone! A group of crazy swimmers (and support kayakers) have found the need to swim 22km across Lake Malawi (in Africa) for a very worth while cause on the 4th of April 2022. We're aiming to raise US$30,000 by the 17th April, to build a contraceptive health clinic in a poor suburb of Lilongwe, Malawi. My sister Wilma, who lived in Malawi, tragically passed away in March 2021 at the age of 55, leaving two children aged 20 and 23. She was a passionate charity worker, working tirelessly for the well-being of the local Malawian, in particular for women's health and education. Malawi is a patriarchal society where women are often not in control of their reproductive health. The spiral of poverty begins when teenage girls have a child and are therefore unable to attend school. In contrast, free and easily accessible contraception is a privilege we take for granted; without it our lives would be very different. There is no doubt that this contraceptive implant is a lifeline for these young women.
When funds are available, Dr Musa's clinic inserts the implants free of charge. He also runs a child health clinic and offers other medical services within his scope. The closest hospital is an expensive bus ride away and, as many patients cannot afford the fare, he is often in high demand. You can hear in the video how the clinic is a vital part of the Kauma community. To build and furnish a new clinic will cost US$15,000, the remaining $15,000 will provide running costs and implants. As each implant costs less than a $1, you can see that every single penny makes a real difference and will be hugely appreciated by all the women in Kauma. We'll update you on our progress! Many thanks or "Zikomo" in Chichewa.
