Char runs for EJI

Hi! My name is Charlotte Melville and I'm a future middle school math teacher. With everything going on in the US, I could not sit idly by and just watch it happen. What kind of teacher would I be if I didn't try to help my students when they need me? That being said, I'm unable to join protests because I live with people who are at high-risk for COVID-19, and I don't have a lot of money to donate. Signing petitions didn't feel like enough, so I'm raising money to benefit Equal Justice Initiative.

I've been running a lot lately, and I thought it would be a lot of fun to run for a cause! I plan on continuing this fundraiser until my half marathon training ends on August 30th, 2020.  I will be documenting my training on an instagram account I made specifically for this cause: @char_runs_for_eji. Additionally, I will be taking this opportunity to educate myself on racial and economic injustice and will be using my instagram to share information I find during my research.

Here's some more information about Equal Justice Initiative: The Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) is a nonprofit, human rights organization committed to ending mass incarceration and excessive punishment in the United States, challenging racial and economic injustice, and protecting the basic human rights for the most vulnerable people in American society.

I chose to donate to the Equal Justice Initiative because four years ago I read a book called Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson, the founder of the Equal Justice Initiative. That book really opened my eyes to the extent of the injustices endured by so many people of color in our society. I want to help EJI continue to fight injustice and educate the nation.
