Our film will dramatize key moments of Cathy's experience, highlighting her courage, resilience, and the evolution of women's roles in mining. The project prioritizes collaboration with female and non-binary filmmakers and gives strong preference to local crew members from Northern Ontario.

Genre: Non-fiction narrative
In 1979, the only woman on a rough mining site battles daily harassment, pushing her to confront a toxic culture that would rather bury her than change.

WHY IS THIS STORY IMPORTANT TO TELL

This story can be highly impactful because it sheds light on issues of gender inequality and the double standards that often exist in the workplace. Highlights the courage it takes for someone to stand up against a toxic environment and challenge the status quo.

It’s a powerful reminder of the importance of advocacy, resilience, and the need for change in any industry.

ABOUT CREW

Film Director/writer
Cathy Mulroy

The daughter of a hard-rock miner. She became one of the first women hired to work in a non-traditional job at a well-known, giant mining company — a rare and often present presence in a fiercely male-dominated industry. Also known for writing the book My view from the Blackened Rocks: A Womanʼs Battle for Equality and Respect in Canadaʼs Mining Industry.

Cathy’s early years in the mine were marked by open hostility, sexist magazine images plastered across the workspace, and a company culture determined to keep women out. As one of the only women on site, she faced harassment, discrimination, and threats, all while fighting to prove she belonged.
