Changing lives in Peru – Medical Mission Trip

Have you ever been to the doctor and felt the relief of your pain go away? Or perhaps, you or a loved one have suffered the heartache from a troubling diagnosis.

 

Whether it's watching your kid eagerly lick a lollipop the nice doctor gave them, swallowing your last antibiotic pill or getting wheeled out of surgery to rest and recover, doctors have undoubtedly changed our lives.

 

For many of us, the comfort, reassurance, and treatment we’ve received from them in our lifetimes is a gift.

 

This June, I have the privilege of spending two weeks in Chulucanas, Peru, a small mountain town in the country's northwestern part. Serving as an interpreter with the Global Health Volunteers, I will work alongside other talented nurses and doctors to provide this community with free clinics and surgeries; for many, this will be the first medical treatment they’ve received in their lifetimes.

 

I am thrilled to be joining my sister, Clarissa, who previously lived and volunteered as an interpreter on these medical mission trips. Reflecting on her experience, she shared, “I can distinctly remember a man who had cataracts removed by an eye surgeon and said he could see for the first time in 30 years - I was able to share his story with the doctor as he wept with joy.”

 

As I think about the faces of the mothers, fathers and children I’m soon to meet, I hope I can be a loving vessel for them – to express their gratitude, happiness, joy and, also concerns.
