Chalk Back Fundraiser

The Problem
According to a recent Ipsos survey, 78% of women globally have experienced street harassment (2019). This includes staring (57%), whistling (55%), unwanted sexual comments (51%), unwelcome touching (44%), following (37%), or indecent exposure (32%). Street harassment is a global issue that leaves many girls, women, and LGBTQIA+ individuals feeling unsafe. It has lasting negative effects on our mental and emotional health and is part of a culture of gender-based violence. 30% of women who reported facing sexual harassment also said they felt anxiety or depression (Measuring #MeToo, 2019).  Due to cultural stigmas, street harassment may be belittled, ignored, and difficult to report. According to a major worldwide study on street harassment by Plan International fewer than 1 in 10 incidents in 5 cities are reported to police, and when they are, less than one-third of cases were acted upon (2019). The pandemic has exacerbated all forms of gender-based violence and left girls, women, and LGBTQIA+ individuals increasingly vulnerable to street harassment. For example, with emptier streets many report feeling less safe outside.

Who benefits from your donation?
Chalk Back is a youth-led grassroots movement committed to fighting gender-based harassment. All of our activities are volunteer-run. We are raising money now through the end of the year to keep our activities up and running next year.

We’re raising $10,000 to maintain Chalk Back’s efforts and grow our capacity. The funds will allow us to expand our activities and campaigns raising awareness about gender-based street harassment. According to AWID Women’s Rights, feminist movements only receive 1% of all gender focused aid. Paying young activists and artists for our work is critical to end street harassment. The funds will go to our grassroots activism (chalking and social media content creation), organizing, and expansion efforts.

For young activists, a little money goes a long way. The majority of us are teenagers, students, and young adults. Your donation will go directly to our activism and allow us to continue Chalking Back.

The money will go to the following funds and support the following activities.

Chalk Back Leadership Fund:
As we are turning our grassroots movement into a sustainable organization, Chalk Back is relying on a leadership team of young activists. This fund will provide stipends to members of the leadership team to advance the organizational structure of Chalk Back.

Chalk Fund:
The chalk fund is exactly what it sounds like! We’re raising money to ensure that all Chalk Back activists can buy enough chalk to keep creating street art.

Data Fund:
To ensure that Chalk Back members from around the world can join planning calls, we are raising money for our members' data.

Accessibility Fund:
Chalk Back wants to ensure that our content is accessible to all. Our accessibility fund will provide funding for translation efforts, inclusive social media content creation, and interpretation for our digital events.

Creative Fund:
The creative fund will go to activists and artists working on our website and social media campaigns. We will pay artists and members of Chalk Back to keep our website up to date with our latest information and campaigns.

Programming Fund:
We will plan programming and digital events for the activists in our network. Sessions will address self care, leadership, and intersectionality.
