Hello, my name is Knyla.
I have created this GoFundMe on behalf of my mother, Ebony, and my siblings.
Starting in December 2024, my mother lost her job due to health concerns, which inevitably led to her losing her home. Since then, she and her children have experienced homelessness, moving between the homes of family members and friends, as well as staying in hotels and shelters.
At one point, they were even living in her van. She and the kids have been through so much over the past year. I was unaware of the situation until mid-2025, at which point I had them relocate from rural Illinois to my apartment in Indianapolis.
That, in and of itself, has been a rollercoaster. As I was fully unprepared to support five people one of whom has a serious medical condition I have been struggling to ensure they have everything they need. Since January 21st, Ebony has been hospitalized due to unknown infections, kidney injury, Lupus, and other autoimmune conditions. She has undergone dialysis, multiple scans, and extensive bloodwork. It has been a never-ending process to stabilize her health so she can eventually resume her life. Before she was admitted to the hospital, we were able to secure the family a place at the Wheeler Mission Shelter here in Indianapolis, but since then my brothers and sister have been with me and other available relatives when able.
Ebony has faced many challenges, many of which, ironically, have occurred within the medical field. My mother has been a nurse for over two decades and has always treated her profession with the utmost respect and compassion for the people she helped. However, during her time as a patient rather than a caregiver, she and our family have received heartbreaking treatment from "medical professionals."
The final straw for her involved my brother, Ahkil. He is a Type 1 diabetic and has been since he was 20 months old now 10. He recently experienced negligent care from a nurse at his school. After Ahkil’s health fluctuated for a year, he and our other brother, Ahzir, finally regained a sense of normalcy by returning to school. However, Ahkil’s medical condition requires specific care that must be met by those agreeing to be responsible for him such as a school. Ahkil began attending an MSDLT school on October 9th. He had an action plan created by Riley Children’s Hospital, and my mother took all the necessary steps to ensure his safety. Despite this, the school nurse said and did concerning things that caused Ebony to question her ability to care for Ahkil.
After numerous attempts to ensure Ahkil was safe at school, my mom set up a meeting on December 4, 2025 with the MSDLT Director of Nursing, the Director of Student Services, the school principal, and the Community Health Network's Director of Nursing and school-based nurses. In this meeting, my mother’s concerns were dismissed, policies were prioritized over safety, and Ahkil’s well-being was ignored.
The MSDLT school district members in that meeting cited a policy stating that the nurse was not to call 911 unless a student was unconscious. This policy placed my brother in a life-threatening situation. The school declined to correct the nurse, refused to allow her to act as a prudent medical professional, and failed to create a safe environment for my brother. You may wonder how this policy affected him. Due to the nurse's neglectful treatment, his blood sugar reached critical lows multiple times.
In the most recent instance, she administered 16 units of insulin, a dose he has never required even after our mother warned her that she was over-medicating him. My mother had to call an ambulance for him because she could not safely monitor him and drive at the same time. His blood sugar was 33 by the time help arrived. It is a medical fact that dangerously low or high blood sugar in a diabetic is a life-threatening emergency requiring immediate intervention to prevent brain damage or death. Unconsciousness means the patient cannot safely eat or drink, necessitating an emergency glucagon injection and an immediate 911 call. The school stated multiple times that the nurse had "200 other students" to care for.
Despite the emergency state the nurse caused through negligence, MSDLT hindered the necessary intervention that they presumably insinuated she was unable to do so given the amount of student. My mother stated her son was unsafe and that she did not trust the policy or the nurse. Instead of addressing the issue, the district members chose to protect themselves, dismissed her concerns, and allowed her to unenroll Ahkil.
Why We Need Your Help
The purpose of this GoFundMe is not only to help me care for my family and return them to a path of stability, but also to spread awareness about negligence in the medical field. We want to hold those involved accountable. Ahkil deserves to go to school, and my mother deserves peace of mind while he is there. The funds are needed for: Housing Basic needs (food, clothes, toiletries) Medical supplies Simultaneously, we are exploring our legal options to hold the people responsible for worsening an already difficult situation accountable. Ebony has stated she is tired of running and tired of not being heard. Accountability is needed.
Thank you.
