Celtic Forest Nation
We've planted a forest in the West of Ireland and now we are opening it up to the community. Trees give us so much. They are the foundation of our Culture. Co create and share the abundance of the Candlefield Community Forest. #celticforestnation
Candlefield Community Forest
Celtic Druid Temple RCN 20106003 is a religious charity and has guardianship of 16.5 acres of land in North Roscommon. We have developed it considerably over the last 10 years. Our aim is to co create a Nature Preserve and resource for our members and the local community with plenty of woodland trails, bird watching hides and spaces for nature retreats. 16,000 trees make up our young woodland, and all are being grown without the use of chemicals.
Celtic Forest Nation - Food, Fuel and Fun - a new way of living.
Ireland's natural state is predominately woodland. When left to it's own devices the Land will nurture the growth of trees. It doesn't really need our help to do this. Re-education of the Human is what we feel is needed. We don't know how to collectively live with the forest any more and that is really what we are exploring here - how our way of life will change as we interact and live with the forest. We know that our ancestors lived within the forest and their way of life was shaped by this interaction - we ask what will this be like for us today? When we change ourselves we change the world around us. Trees can support, shelter and nurture this growth.
Saturday is Volunteer Day
You can volunteer to help us - simply email us firstname.lastname@example.org write Volunteer in the subject box and give your details in the main body of the email. Please give us your name, age, any relevant experience, preferred date(s) and of course your contact details - email etc. You will need boots and wet gear. See FAQ below.
You can help us with a Donation to support the development of our community forest project. We are at the 'hard landscaping' and services stage. We are aiming to raise €11,000 this year as we have estimated that this will achieve our first goal of opening the forest for family activities every Saturday in 2020. Funds received will also go towards developing our volunteer programme as well as our community outreach programme. The list of all the practicals that are needed includes tree guards, tree supports, foot bridges, gates, drainage, building a pond in the centre of the forest, maintenance of the off grid electrical system, volunteer accomodation. All donations go directly to Celtic Druid Temple a registered religious charity RCN 20106003 in Ireland.
If you belong to a group that might have interest in co creating this forest space get in touch. For example we are currently making plans with our local archery club on how to develop an archery range within our forest.
Money to invest in Nature
Our forest is surrounded by acres of Land for sale. You can help us make our community forest even bigger by purchasing Land that connects to our forest. This is something that needs a conversation between you and us. The best option is that you buy the Land and remain the registered owner. We then work on a long term memorandum of understanding detailing our access and use of the Land to further our community project.

On Wednesday last, 40 children and their teachers joined me in a walk around the Land, we started at the Round House where after an introduction each child took a quartz pebble to bring on their walk. When we got to the edge of the young forest I asked them to hold the pebble tight and breath a wish of health into the rock then encouraged them to find a tree to leave the pebble and wish with. We had great fun. My favourite quote from the school's visit in response to me saying I've offered to host a beehive.. “well, if you do get bees send them down to us as we've just planted a pollinators garden” .... the school is just under a mile away so it might just happen :)
