Celebrate Veterans & First Responders - Blues, Brews, & BBQ

The origin of the Blues, Brews, and Barbecue started at a Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) breakfast in Manchester, TN, where local business owner Mike Cardinal and veteran Craig Kowalski realized the local VFW could use more recognition and support. Wanting to make a difference, they devised an idea: an amateur barbecue competition to raise funds and awareness.

They approached Common John Brewing Company—a business with deep military roots and a strong community spirit—to host the event. Common John quickly came on board, offering their space for a weekend of smoked meats, live music, and awareness. The first year exceeded all expectations: over 500 people attended, over 20 amateur barbecuers competed, and the event raised over $12,000. Half of the proceeds went directly to the VFW, while the other half was shared among charities chosen by Coffee County’s First Responders. The Military Museum also joined the effort, adding depth and meaning to the celebration. This 100% volunteer-led event is more than just a cook-off—it’s a chance for our community to come together and support those who’ve served and continue to serve our community.

Mike Cardinal and his wife Jackie relocated to the area in 2018. During their time here, as small business owners, they’ve actively sought out opportunities to be active in the community and give back when opportunities presented. Being an avid “smoker” the Blues, Brews and Barbecue event was the perfect opportunity for Mike and Jackie along with their restaurant and wine bar located in Winchester, TN to have a little fun, smoke a little meat, raise monies, and awareness for our Veterans and First Responders.
