CCS Emergency Meal Support
Tax deductible
At the request of the Charlottesville City Schools (CCS), members of the Cultivate Charlottesville’s Food Justice Network (FJN) are pulling together to provide meal distribution during the first week of September in order to fill the gap during CCS break period when Federal meal programs are not active. FJN plans to provide 4000 meals during the week while also supporting local business.
We are looking to our Batten Community to help fulfill this financial need by donating whatever monetary contribution we are able to. Our Batten community is comprised of over 400 individuals (students, faculty and staff), and if everyone chipped in $10-15 dollars (your regular Roots order or your weekly Starbucks orders), we will easily be able to reach our goal and feed local City school youth.
More information about Cultivate Charlottesville and the Food Justice Network: Cultivate Charlottesville engages youth and community in building equitable, sustainable food systems through garden-based experiential learning, growing and sharing healthy food, amplifying community leaders, and advocating for food justice. The Food Justice Network is a collaboration of more than 30 organizations and agencies working together for a more healthful and equitable local food system.
More information on childhood nutrition in Charlottesville: We know from research that there is a connection between learning and hunger.
In an interview with UVA Today in 2018 Sibylle Kranz, an associate professor of kinesiology and a registered dietitian nutritionist in the Curry School said that
“There is pretty solid evidence that children who are hungry are not able to
focus, so they have a low attention span, behavioral issues, discipline issues in the
school...Having children who are well-fed and not hungry makes a difference in their individual performance, and also how much they are contributing to or disrupting the classroom situation.” We also know that Covid-19 threatens to
widen the education and hunger gaps in our community as cautioned in the letter “Paths Toward Partnership in the Covid-19 Crisis” spearheaded by members of the UVA community. This is an opportunity to ally with community organizations, businesses, and donors to make sure our students are well fed and have the best chance possible of succeeding during unprecedented times.
