DFW International asks your help on behalf of the Ahmad Haj Khalif family (parents and 7 children) who fled the Syrian city of Daraa' when government tanks flattened their homes. This very needy refugee family is ZAKAT ELIGIBLE.
Can you join us in
a. obtaining a battery powered mobility scooter for Ahmed, who is housebound by major health problems
b. covering cost of housing for the next 6 months, until their two teenage daughters are able to shoulder this responsibility?
Ahmad was selected by the State Dept for resettlement in the US on the basis of his extremely precarious health situation (and that of one disabled child) but 4 years after arrival, the family receives only SSI benefits of $1,300 a month. That covers only their rent $950) and electric bill ($225 to $415), leaving nothing for other expenses for this large family of nine that lives in a small 3 BR apartment.
Sadly, Ahmad's health continues to deteriorate and he must use oxygen 24 hours a day. Nevertheless, he continues to serve as our liaison for Syrian refugees in Fort Worth, enabling us to help other families in need. 12 year old Mohammad suffers from multiple birth defects but can how hear (with the help of a new cochineal implant) and hopefully will soon be speaking.
The family has experienced additional bad luck - one daughter's employment was cut short when she was badly injured in a car accident (not her fault) and what seemed to be the happy event of another daughter marrying and having a baby turned dark when domestic abuse forced her and her son to return to the family home. But with the help of mentors and volunteers, their two teenage daughters will be able to work part time in the fall, while continuing to attend school.
Our goal is to raise at least $9,000, to cover expenses of rent and electricity for at least 6 months - and to purchase a mobi9lity scooter..
