It's my 29th birthday on Sunday. If you've considered buying me a gift or a pint, please donate the price of it here instead.
My goal is that 29 of you donate a tenner, and together we can buy essentials - like food and toiletries - for my neighbours.
For context:
I live in central Brighton, 200 metres down the road from a "hotel" where people seeking asylum in the UK are housed indefinitely.
In the last few weeks:
- They are no longer being given clean drinking water. They have been told to drink from the taps in the toilet.
- The kettles have been confiscated. They cannot purify the water, or prepare baby formula.
- They do not have access to fridges, stoves, microwaves. They cannot use food banks, because fresh food expires out of the fridge, and they have no means of opening or heating canned food.
- They are provided food 3 times a day - if they don't go within this assigned time, they don't eat.
- The food is heated from frozen. Leftovers are then re-frozen, and the use by dates are changed.
- People are routinely sick with food poisoning.
- The amount of time they are allowed to spend outside of the "hotel" is 14 nights every six months.
- They are given £8 per week to live on, total.
- A bus ticket here costs £7. A pint costs £7.50.
Some of the residents in the hotel who I see each Wednesday have stopped eating entirely. One has eaten one meal per day - often eggs that have gone off - for the last 6 months. Some have been in the hotels for 3 years.
I've spent my 20s working with resilient, interesting people who have endured greater hardship with greater grit that the vast majority of us born in the UK ever will.
