My name is Catherine D., and I am a sophomore at Groton Dunstable Regional High School. Currently, I am a Life Scout in Troop 13 Groton, Massachusetts, and I am working towards the rank of Eagle Scout, which is the highest rank in scouting. I am a founding member of Groton’s first all-female troop, launched in 2019 when females were first able to join Scouts BSA. While in Scouts, I have had the opportunity to work on many outdoor skills, demonstrate leadership and go camping in all seasons. Outside of school and scouting, I enjoy running on the GD cross country and track teams, competitive sailing in Maine during summers, and spending lots of time outdoors. I am an instructor with the Camden Area Youth Sailing Program. I have also worked closely with my school’s environmental club to promote recycling at our school and to get students interested in helping the environment. The environment is very important to me, as I am often found outdoors and have been inspired to preserve the earth so it can be safe from the harm of all pollutants. For my Eagle project, I will be constructing three large display boxes for the Town of Groton Transfer Station that will each correspond to a recycling product/area. Each box will show physical examples of what can and cannot go into recycling areas, as well as descriptive instructions and useful information. I will demonstrate leadership to a team of volunteers to build and install the display boxes. My project aims to educate the community about proper recycling practices and make it easier for Transfer Station employees to manage the organization of each recycling area. By completing this project, I will take a small but important step toward helping Groton as a community make sustainable choices for the well-being of our environment.
