Cammell Laird: Pressure is on to save jobs
While workers at Cammell Laird shipyard should be celebrating the awarding of £619M Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) contracts to the company unfortunately they have found themselves receiving a HR1 proposing 291 redundancies, with the first dismissal taking place just weeks before Christmas.
Earlier this year workers were encouraged by management to accept a five year pay deal, as it would secure jobs over that period.
Unite and GMB unions, who represent the majority of workers have launched a campaign “Turning the tide on Casualisation” as they believe this is merely an attempt to dismiss directly employed workers and replace them with insecure agency labour at a later date, to maximise profits.
On Friday 9 November nearly 80 per cent of Unite members backed strike action in a ballot over job fears.
Unite & GMB are calling on the UK government and the Ministry of Defence to sit down with Cammell Laird so that work can be organised in a way to avoid compulsory redundancies and secure jobs at the shipyard for years to come.

The funds raised will be used as a fund to support the workers protesting and striking against job losses as they fear there jobs will be replaced by casual labour.
The money will be withdrawn directly to the branch account where the funds can then be used as needed.
