Cass County Sheriff's Office K9 Program

Fellow citizens,

I am writing to ask for your help in tackling one of our county’s greatest challenges.

There is no other way to say this:  methamphetamine “meth” has ravaged Cass County. Meth does not discriminate and has affected Cass County residents from every walk of life. This horrific substance destroys the lives of its users, their families, and friends. People who abuse meth abandon important responsibilities such as raising children, maintaining gainful employment, and caring for one’s health and may eventually neglect simple tasks such as personal hygiene and even eating.  Meth addicts dedicate all of their time, effort, and money to obtaining the drug; it becomes all they care about.

Children of addicts are often neglected and physically, mentally, and emotionally abused. They suffer long-term effects, and often become involved in the child-services and criminal justice systems. When meth addicts are unable to maintain employment, they often turn to burglary and theft in order to get their next fix. Because meth addicts care only about buying more meth, they often do not pay their bills or maintain their homes, driving down the appearance of and property values in our community. Sadly, none of us are immune to its devastating effects.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office is dedicated to fighting this epidemic head on. The size of our county can be both an asset and a detriment in fighting this drug. Our size is detrimental because we do not have the funding or resources that larger communities enjoy. However, this means that every arrest we make, every dealer we remove from the street, and every person we help seek treatment for their addiction makes a tremendous difference. All of these things are important steps toward eradicating this drug from our community. You may be asking: How can I help?

Law enforcement needs the proper tools to combat Cass County’s meth problem.  The most important tool we can acquire is the use of a police K-9.  A K-9 gives police officers an advantage no person or piece of technology can. A dog’s nose is millions of times more sensitive than a person’s and a trained K-9 will be able to detect persons transporting illegal drugs on our streets.  Stopping the flow of meth is key to ending this epidemic.  A police dog will also be able to track offenders committing property crimes ending cases with arrests at a rate much higher than their human counterparts.

The acquisition of a police K-9 comes with substantial investment in the animal, manpower, training and equipment, but I firmly believe these added costs are justified and essential to keeping our citizens safe. I am asking for your help. The Cass County Sheriff’s Office will incur most of the expense, but I am asking for donations from businesses and local citizens to get help with program start-up costs. Any donations we receive will be publicly acknowledged.

When I campaigned for Sheriff, I made it known that ending meth addiction disease in Cass County was one of my utmost priorities.  The acquisition of a police K-9 is an important step toward fighting meth in our county.  I know the citizens of Cass County are stronger together. We can take this epidemic head on and greatly reduce its devastating impact on all of us.  Together we can make Cass County a safer and more productive community to live and work in.  Thank you very much for your time and consideration. I look forward to partnering together to show the people that are delivering this poison to our citizens that we will not back down.

Sincerely,

 Sheriff Devron Ohrn
