Who We Are:
[UPDATED 4/24]
My name is Diente , I am Two Spirit, Yoruba and Borikua parent and healer based in Coquehannock Lenapehoking (West Philly). Sky , my partner and husband, is a philly-born Mvskoke plant worker, parent and artist. Together we work on land reclamation, rehabilitation, and sustainability organizing - this has been the fuel for our project, Gente de Tierra.
We live in Casa Sabera , a cooperative housing for Black, and Indigenous, gender non-confirming people. We live here with our child and comrades through the low-income housing nonprofit, The Life Center Association . The LCA is a network of cooperative living spaces located throughout West Philly.
For the last year, our home has been supporting and developing mutual aid networks, and using knowledge, land, and tools to cultivate our own resources. Such as farming, outdoors and indoors, producing and processing our own materials, services, and goods, and investing in the larger community. Using our home as the model, we are working to reshape the larger LCA community into prioritizing equitability and sustainable living throughout West Philly.
Why We’re Sourcing Funds:
Unexpectedly this month, we lost our most essential tool, our car. Since being laid off in March 2020 due to COVID, our home has been surviving without income, and has no means of replacing this much needed car. This has been a big blow to the mutual aid work we have been committed to for the last year. We have had to suspend a lot of our work within the community because of this setback.
We've been working hard to allocate resources for the community. Making sure people are eating, are not without utilities, have clean clothes, get their medications, have PPE, access COVID testing and vaccination sites; whatever life sustaining support we are able to provide.
Though I am disabled, I have learned to live and continue this work, with my chronic conditions, motivated by revolution, and the support of my community. I love doing what I do, and want to continue this good work.
We are working quickly to source funds , something that could carry our organizing efforts for the next few years. Providing us with a much needed, and deserved, security.
Our Goal:
A Small SUV, 2013, around 20mpg (city), Automatic transmission, all Wheel Drive
