Carrick Emmets 39th Annual Christmas Day Swim

The inaugural Christmas Day swim was held in 1982, the brainchild of Paddy Gollogly. Now almost forty years in existence, the swim is held every Christmas Day at Creevy Lake and has raised thousands of euros for good causes over the intervening years.

The swim was originally proposed many years ago to help those that find themselves in life-changing circumstances arising from illness or infirmity; likewise it is used to fund equipment and assist in home support and benefits.

This charity event is run on a voluntary basis and the club do not take anything from the returns; all the sponsorship raised goes to the named beneficiary fund or recipient: It is also the means for the Emmet Club to put something back into the community that serves us well!

This year the main recipient of the swim is the Baldwin family; Mark & Sharon Baldwin and their sons Kurt (15) and Axel (7), who both have Muscular Dystrophy.  All funds raised will go directly to the family to purchase much needed equipment and other resources to meet the boys needs.

Normally the swim is a great community event with lots of swimmers participating and collecting donations with sponsorship cards.  However due to the current Covid pandemic things are a little different this year, with donations moving online. All donations will be transferred to a dedicated Christmas Day Swim Credit Union account and a cheque will be presented to the Baldwin family by Paddy Gollogly.

Message from a previous beneficiary - Fanchea Keenan

Please Support the Carrickmacross Emmets in the Christmas Day Swim, in 2009 the committee approached us to ask could they do the Swim to support Emma and at that time we were humbled but also very apprehensive as we never really wanted to be in that situation. As it turned out, due to the unbelievable support and everyone’s generosity the whole event was a huge success. The money that was raised bought a Vibrating Vest to enable Emma to have a break from the gruelling Physiotherapy. She definitely needed the break. We as a family learnt that sometimes we need other people’s support and kindness and that fabulous day will forever remain etched in our hearts. Please this year as always come together to help the Gorgeous Baldwin boys. Community support is a large part of Carrickmacross and the Emmet’s are an absolute Credit to themselves and their families.

Please donate whatever you can to support Kurt and Axel.
