Carpentry Project - LBT Youth in Timor

Donation protected
This fundraiser is for young Lesbian and Bisexual women; and young Trans men in East Timor so that they can buy materials for their small (but growing) woodworking business. These young people work together to create furniture and sculptures to sell at markets so they can support their female partners and kids. Some of these young people cannot access employment opportunities as they have not finished their high school education. Others have not had access to training centres or similar opportunities.

At Arcoiris, people are receiving a range of hands on skills including carpentry. You can read about Acoiris here: Facebook link

Bella Galhos and Iram Saeed run an incredible safe space in East Timor called Arco Iris, meaning ‘Rainbow’ in Portuguese (one of the official languages in Timor-Leste). The space is often used as a temporary shelter for those who are facing violent discrimination in their family or village. Located in the Dili suburb of Bidau Santa-Ana, it is here that people can gather together to support each other and discuss the issues they face as a community.

You can read more about Arcoiris and the important work they do here: Right Now article (Please note that the experiences described in this article may be confronting and distressing to some people. You can always save it and read it later.) Arcoiris is for all women who identify as Lesbian and Bisexual; and for men who identify as Trans.

These young people are resilient, strong and powerful. They continue to stand up for who they are and fight for those they love. With this fundraiser we hope to offer them the resources they need to put food on the table for themselves, their families and their community. Raising money is one way we can tell these young people - we believe in you! We are standing with you!

I would like to also acknowledge the long standing and powerful work of the Blue Mountains East Timor Sisters (auspiced by Blue Mountains Together for Timor), who are incredible changemakers: Projects
