I was seventeen years old when I first stepped foot in Athens. I had no idea then that a trip led by my high school Latin teacher would begin a relationship with Greece that would shape the next decade of my life. Two summers ago, I marked ten years of returning to a country that has given me far more than I ever expected, and this coming summer will make twelve.
Over the years, Greece has become a second home. I’ve explored the Peloponnese, lived on different islands, pushed myself to truly learn the language (albeit I speak embarrassingly slow from stage fright), and returned again and again to a place that I feel entwined with in connection, history, and of course- philanthropía. Through Greek America Corps and Greek America Foundation, I’ve had the privilege of working directly with children and communities, most recently supporting refugee students on Chios. Seeing the real impact of this work in 2024 and 2025 are moments I do not take lightly and I continue to carry with me.
What keeps drawing me back isn’t just the beauty or the history- it’s the people, the trust that I’ve built, and the shared knowledge that education, culture, and service can co-exist and change lives on both sides of the experience. Greece has offered me comfort, purpose and a belonging I feel deeply motivated by, to help offer that same sense of care to others.
This year, my personal resolution is to connect more people to the things I care about and fundraising for Greek America Foundation is just one way I can do that. I’m hoping to raise $1,200 (or more), ideally through ten people giving $10 a month for a year, or a one time gift of $120. This supports programs that sustain GAC/GAF’s mission.
I work in higher education development and fundraising full-time, and I volunteer year-round with GAF because I truly believe in the mission they both serve. I have spent most of my adult life trying to use my privilege for good. Supporting this work isn’t just something I do, it has become a critical part of who I am and the path I’m building my life work toward.
Every contribution, big or small, makes a real impact. Even just a few dollars can help move this mission forward and reach those who need it most.
If you can’t donate right now, sharing this fundraiser is also incredibly helpful. Thank you for helping me continue work that means the world to me, and for being part of something that has shaped my life in the most beautiful ways.
