Carolina’s fight against Ataxia Telangiectasia

This is Carolina. A sweet and bubbly child, who loves the colors of summer mornings, warm hugs, and endless laughter. But Carolina is a special girl. In 2023, she was diagnosed with a rare genetic disease called Ataxia Telangiectasia. Ataxia is a neurodegenerative, complex, and progressive disease that primarily affects the neurological and immune systems, with no treatment or cure.

It all started, when she was still a little girl, with minor coordination failures. An unsteady gait, followed by a peculiar smile and compromised vision. Then came the constant days at the doctor's, sick. Until, after various tests and diagnoses, the cause was finally found.

Since the beginning of this year, Carolina has significantly worsened, losing the ability to use her legs and arms, which makes all basic daily functions difficult, such as eating, bathing, etc.

These last few years have been physically and psychologically very intense, not only for Carolina but also for her parents. The psychological burden of adapting to such a harsh reality has been brutal for the entire family. Financially, it has been another major problem. The expenses with all the consultations, therapies, devices, and medication have been immense and, inevitably, they will become even greater, given the progressiveness of the disease and prognostic.

And this is where I ask for your help!

Carolina urgently needs a wheelchair adapted to her needs, and her mother/father need a car that fits this new reality. In the near future, a new house, also adapted. All of this is impossible without your assistance.

I, the one writing, Carolina's aunt, and the whole family will be eternally grateful to anyone who wants to help. Whether it's money or a few brief words of love.

And Carolina will continue to enjoy the summer and winter afternoons, sitting in a chair designed just for brave girls.

Esta é a Carolina. Uma criança doce e cheia de vida, que adora as cores das manhãs de verão, abraços apertados e gargalhadas sem fim. Mas a Carolina é uma menina especial. Em 2023 foi lhe diagnosticada uma doença genética rara chamada Ataxia Telangiectasia. A Ataxia é uma doença neurodegenerativa, complexa e progressiva que afeta maioritariamente o sistema neurológico e imunitário, sem qualquer tratamento ou cura.

Tudo começou, ainda pequena, com pequenas falhas na coordenação muscular. Um andar desequilibrado, seguidos de um sorriso peculiar e uma visão comprometida. Seguiram-se, depois, os dias constantes no médico, doente. Ate que, apos diversos testes e diagnosticos, foi finalmente encontrado a causa.

Desde o início deste ano, a Carolina piorou significativamente, deixando de conseguir usar as pernas e braços, o que dificulta todas as funções básicas do dia a dia, comer, tomar banho etc.

Têm sido anos muito intensos física e psicologicamente, tanto para Carolina como para os pais. A carga psicológica de toda esta adaptação a uma realidade difícil e dura tem sido brutal para toda a família. Financeiramente, tem sido outro grande problema. As despesas com todas as consultas, terapias, aparelhos, medicação tem sido imensa e, inevitavelmente, vira a ser ainda maior, dada as progressivas restrições.

E é aqui que peço a vossa ajuda!

A Carolina precisa urgentemente de uma cadeira de rodas adaptada às suas necessidades e a mãe/pai um carro que se ajuste a esta nova realidade. Num futuro próximo, uma nova casa, também adaptada. Tudo isto, é impossível sem auxílio.

Eu, quem escrevo, tia da Carolina e toda a família, ficaremos eternamente agradecidos a cada um que queira ajudar com um pouquinho que seja. Seja dinheiro ou umas breves palavras de amor.

E a Carolina continuará a apreciar as tardes de verão e inverno, sentada numa cadeira desenhada só para meninas valentes.
