Carlisle and District Model Engineers Society
Donation protected
The Carlisle and District Model Engineering Society, based in Upperby Park in Carlisle since 1948, runs a miniature railway on a raised circular track and provides train rides for the public on weekends and bank holidays throughout the summer. The track has been a popular feature of the park for many years. We are funded entirely by member subscriptions, donations and the small fee we charge per passenger. The track and buildings of the society require regular maintenance, all performed by the society members and volunteers. The society, like many others, was badly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, only resuming public running in the summer of 2024, although our expenses remained the same throughout that period. Our annual running costs, just for electricity and public liability insurance, are in excess of £5000 with additional costs for the maintenance of the track and buildings. The reserves of the society have been depleted due to the long period when we were unable to run. We are now up and running again but we are looking to raise an additional £1000 to allow us to carry out some essential maintenance of the track, our rolling stock and our two buildings.
We would be so grateful if anybody was able to help us. Our volunteers and members have endeavoured to provide a service to the public over the last 70+ years, only charging enough to cover our costs (hence no real savings). None of our members are paid whilst giving their time and run their own locos (which must then be maintained at their own expense) purely as a part of their hobby.
