OUR DREAM
To establish a Caritas charity shop + sewing lab in Kampala, Uganda.
A safe, clean and welcoming space - selling second-hand and upcycled** clothes, along with conducting workshops on environmental awareness and sustainable fashion in schools and selected groups of people already skilled in tailoring. Additionally, we plan to provide tools, materials, support and entrepreneurial training to improve credit management and business investment skills.
** Upcycling means creating something new from discarded materials by repairing, refurbishing, or repurposing them, obtaining a new product of greater value, while avoiding an industrial process. It is an often custom, creative, and DIY solution to the problem of excess waste and shopping.
OUR BENEFICIARIES
· women facing economic and psychological hardships, particularly those who have suffered from domestic or workplace abuse. They will be involved in every market and shop activity, from the selection to the sale of the donated clothes.
· students of secondary and vocational schools + Ugandan designers or artisans from disadvantaged backgrounds who encounter difficulties entering the workforce or simply seek a platform to increase visibility for their work. They will be involved in the upcycling project using the clothes/fabrics that do not meet the required quality standards to be resold as they are donated.
Their creations will be showcased in the thrift shop and during specially curated markets/events held at Caritas' premises or partners’ venues.
WHAT YOUR DONATION WILL DO:
With your help we will be able to reach around 10 groups of 10 women and young people across the communities we work with, providing free education, tools and materials, mentorship and inspiration to the local community.

We will start by facilitating workshops on Sustainable Fashion and Upcycling. The aim is to educate, transfer knowledge, skills and awareness, and generate new employment opportunities to enable them to participate and contribute confidently to community development at the local level.

WHO WE ARE
My name is Maria Silenzi, an Italian sustainable fashion designer who joined the European Solidarity Corps in 2023. I have been volunteering in Uganda for Caritas Kampala Women's Desk since last July under [email redacted]anitarian.aid (IG) program. https://www.linkedin.com/posts/vc-ug_well-done-maria-activity-7122201430660177920-gu28?utm_source=li_share&utm_content=feedcontent&utm_medium=g_dt_web&utm_campaign=copy
I designed this project by developing an idea of the director and the Caritas leaders, doing research and meeting many people from different realities in the Ugandan fashion industry involved in different empowerment and development initiatives.
