Continued care for the best mom ever...Sylvia Hoyl

“I’ve never been a parent, you’ve never been a kid. But if we stick together, keep communicating with each other, and just love each other, we will be okay. Deal?”

These words were spoken by my mom, Sylvia Hoyle. I have been truly blessed to have her as a parent, as there has never been a day that I didn’t feel loved. At a time when being a single parent still carried a bit of a stigma, my mom rose above and led by her own example. So far, I think I have done her proud; I try to every day. She tells me I do regularly.

On the morning of June 24th, 2022, mom awake from a night’s sleep feeling…off. She couldn’t seem to focus, nor could she articulate her words effectively. She was scheduled for a post-hospitalization follow-up appointment with her primary care physician after spending a week in the hospital with complications of hypertension, or high blood pressure. Upon arrival at her appointment, the doctor didn’t like what she saw, and recommended a return visit to the hospital just as a precaution.

In the ER, the triage team suggested a series of tests, including a CAT scan and an MRI. Once those tests were completed it was figured out that mom had suffered a stroke. At diagnosis it was thought her stroke episode was not as serious, but further re-evaluation suggested otherwise. The damage was fairly widespread in the back of her brain effecting her speech, her sight in her right eye, and caused some weakness on her right side. While not the best news, from the scans her medical team had to read, her post-stroke prognosis could have been much worse.

Her road to full recovery is going to be a long one. She is scheduled to begin in-home physical and occupational therapies and has numerous medical visits ahead of her. Since her COVID-19 diagnosis in 2020 her quality of life has been slowly deteriorating. While most issues have been minor in comparison, the financial impact has been challenging. Thankfully, she has exceptionally good health insurance, but even the best plans trigger situations requiring payment from out-of-pocket. As such, going forward she is going to need some added aid. Any amount contributed would first go towards covering her post-stroke medical expenses including efforts to restore her to her pre-stroke abilities, if possible, as well as to cover any yet to be determined personal expenses that may come up.

My mom is a fiercely private person, and after all her years of kindnesses shown to myself and countless others, it is she who needs some of that kindness returned. If you are able to make a contribution, please do so. Also, please feel free to send this missive to your own network. It is a miracle that she has survived this ordeal as well as she has. To take some of the financial worry off her shoulders would truly be a godsend. On behalf of my mother and myself, I thank you sincerely for taking the time to learn a bit about a woman who means so much to so many…none more than myself.

Blessings to you all!
