Care for Caregivers is a coalition of people taking steps to encourage meaningful change for caregivers in health, the workplace, and beyond. Through community research, we have found:
- Caregivers and migrant workers working in residential care facilities for the elderly (RCFE) are not given the same legal protections as caregivers in larger unionized facilities or domestic workers in the state of Oregon.
- Isolation, language barriers, and migration status all make migrant caregivers more vulnerable.
- Filipino and other im/migrant caregivers in Oregon have been impacted by wage theft, low to no health benefits, and unsafe working conditions.
- Many care homes often face under-staffing issues. Understaffed care homes force caregivers into long hours and multiple roles, harming their physical health with issues like back pain and exhaustion.
Through community discussions, research, advocacy, training, and gatherings, we are uplifting migrant stories and organizing to improve caregivers' livelihood in Oregon.
Community partners involved in this campaign are the Filipino Bayanihan Center, National Alliance for Filipino Concerns (NAFCON), Malaya Portland, Migrante Portland, the International Women's Alliance, and Gabriela Portland.
