Hayden's Car-Aid Project

Our Story:

My name is Hayden Stipe, I am a seventeen-year-old engineering student and I have Cerebral Palsy. Cerebral Palsy is a condition that makes it difficult for me to walk and perform some fine motor tasks. Within the past few years, it began to bother me that my friends were beginning to drive, and I was not. As I researched hand controls, I began to realize that, of the solutions that were currently on the market, they couldn't be easily installed, they weren't customizable, and they weren’t portable (this would present an issue when traveling as rental car companies do not offer cars fitted with hand controls).

Due to all of these issues, I decided to design and build a better hand control system with the help of my friend Jake. Thus the Car-Aid project was born. We set out to build a device that will control the brake and throttle of a car via a joystick. We have built multiple devices to model this concept as part of a school project, but it has quickly evolved into a passion project, and with your help we will soon be able to take it full scale.

By donating to us, you are providing us with the resources to purchase the vehicle and other necessary equipment to complete the project. You are also giving us the opportunity to develop technology that will help not only me but also millions of others like myself in their quest for mobility and independence.

How your money will be used:

$3000 - Subaru Forester
-To be used as the platform for testing prototypes of the device, and to provide Hayden with a mode of transportation.

$2000 - Repairs -Head gaskets -Struts -Extra money reserved for unexpected repairs

$2000 - Car-Aid device
-Linear actuators
-Wiring harness components
-Joystick module components
-Computer module components
-Machining costs

$1000 - Accessibility adaptations
-Automated liftgate, wheelchair lift device etc.
