Capoeira Sol é Lua Community Studio Improvement

Donation protected

Update 01/03/23:

Over the years we have been able to save money on the studio with DIY on many projects. Unfortunately, electrical work is not one of them. The total amount that we need to complete this project is higher than we originally anticipated and we’re quoted due to additional city permit requirements and the cost of working with a licensed electrician. We have increased our target goal to reflect these differences. Your help in achieving this goal, even if it’s just getting the word out, is greatly appreciated.

We are happy to announce that we received our official non profit status in early December. Your donations to this fundraiser are now tax deductible!   Last but not least on December 10th, India received her graduation to Mestra! This March we will celebrate Mestra India’s 28 years of commitment and the 14 years in this beautiful space Sol e Lua UCA in Miami calls home! Our goal is to renovate our space in time to unveil it at this once in a lifetime celebration.   We are reaching out to each and every one of you to help push this last stretch across the finish line and look forward to creating a beautiful Capoeira space for the community to enjoy.

Wishing you and your families a Happy New Years!!!

For almost 20 years, Capoeira Sol E Lua has served the Miami community by providing kids and adult classes in the AfroBrasilian arts of Capoeira, Maculele, Samba, Forro, and Percussion, as well as providing robust visual arts after-school programs.

A decade of weathering floods, hurricanes, and regular wear and tear has left our much loved space in need of an upgrade.

Our goal is to raise $5,200 to cover the costs of renovation, which will include:

  • Electrical upgrades and new lighting
  • Demolition and reconstruction of drop ceiling and interior walls

(See More details below)

In addition to improving the experience for our students and the community at large, these upgrades will allow us to extend the use of the space to other Miami-based movement, artists who are in need of an affordable space to host classes and events.

ABOUT US

Our teacher Contra Mestra India began teaching in 2004, and in 2009 realized her dream of opening a cultural arts center in the heart of Miami.

When we first moved into the space, we tore down the walls, laid the floor, installed the mirrors and did all of the work ourselves to make the beautiful space that houses our wonderful community today. We have raised children here, built life long friendships, and created a supportive community all while preserving important cultural traditions.

We need your help to continue to thrive as a part of the fast-moving Miami arts ecosystem.

Scope
  • Demolition of drop ceiling
  • Fastening mechanical duct work to slab and changing out diffusers
  • Preparation and painting of exposed slab ceiling
  • Painting of the newly exposed MEP lines
  • Electrical preparation and installation of track lighting
  • Reconstruction and painting of adjacent walls
  • Constructing new walls and adding a door to secure the community instruments
  • Supplying and installing track lighting

Budget
  • $2,300 demolition & electrical rework
  • $1,000 reconstruction
  • $1,700 new lighting
  • $200 GoFundMe Fees

We look forward to receiving all the support and love to help us create our dream of enriching the space and growing our school.
