Before the pandemic began, NYC had a food-insecure population of 1.1 million - this number is constantly growing as the city and its residents continue to struggle against COVID and its effects on health, income, and housing. The LES is over 60% BIPOC, with a poverty rate of 30% compared to a citywide 17.3% (furmancenter.org). Starting in August, Canal Cafeteria is transitioning from once weekly free lunches to pay-what-you-can CSA-style produce bags. CC aims to help fill a need for fresh, accessible produce that isn’t currently being met by existing services and organizations in the community.
We are 100% donation based. Fresh and local produce is exponentially more expensive than the lunches we were previously providing. Our goal is set at $10,000 to pay for food, transportation, PPE and other related expenses and supplies required for weekly food distribution.
