Camp Akins

Tabitha and Michael are foster parents to 5 siblings in NYC. My husband & I started this GoFundMe last year to raise funds for their 5 kiddos to go to their first every SummerCamp. Their community showed UP & for the first time, their 5 kids were able to go to Summer Camp. This space has continued to be a place for their community to join us in supporting them. Together, we raised $6,615 to go towards their first Summer Camp as well as help to pay for school supplies throughout the school year.

As of today, 6/11, I have updated their GoFundMe page & below will share with you new ways we can continue to love on & support Tabi, Michael & their 5 amazing kids!

As you may or may not know, they have been a family now for just over a year. Due to Covid19, the closing of all non essential work in NYC, and having to move to a homeschool model (almost over night) for 5 kids while being in quarantine they had to close their business temporarily, and in turn haven't had any income for over 3 months.

At the same time, the kids lost all their after school activities and support that the Akins had advocated for them to receive over the last year: every tutor, class, sport, and after school mentorship programs had to close, leaving that all on their shoulders since the middle of March. Thanks to the support of their community they were able to take care of essential needs over the last few months and are now preparing for the Summer ahead.

Good News! The mayor has just announced that Summer camps can safely move forward with opening after June 29th. 

With these changes in mind, Tabi & Michael will finally be able to re-open their business, start having income again and give the kiddos the social and emotional support that they deserve for a summer of fun!

Unfortunately, due to the time constraint the camps they had registered for earlier this year had all closed before the announcement by the Mayor. The camps still providing socially distance friendly options or virtual options are limited but thankfully there are some nearby that the kiddos can still attend. They have researched which are the safest and best options for each child but with no income and limited choices paying for the camps is a very difficult task. This Go Fund Me was started to help provide the resources needed to pay for the children's camps, which will in turn allow the Akins to begin working again, and make income so that they can catch up from the effects of Covid19. Below is a breakdown of each child's camp needs financially and where the funds will be going.
