Each year, Jesuit High School takes students on immersion trips in an effort to learn from and build relationships with people on the margins of society. These immersion trips offer students an opportunity for an authentic experience in service, spirituality, simple living, community/solidarity, and social justice.

This summer – from June 21 to 27, 2025 – I will participate in an immersion experience in Nogales, Mexico and Nogales, Arizona. Our group of 10 students and two adult leaders will work with Kino Border Initiative, a Jesuit ministry committed to humane migration reform and fostering bi-national solidarity through humanitarian assistance, education, and research/advocacy.

My name is Camila Reyes Perez and currently attending Jesuit High School in Portland, Oregon. As a daughter of immigrant parents, I’ve learned that all the difficulties that my parents went through allowed me and my siblings to not experience the same hardships and not pass through the same thing. I see them as powerful parents, as they talk to me about their story of leaving their family to migrating to the United States for a better life. It brings me in tears. I couldn't be like them; they are so strong and different. This year marks 22 years since they haven’t touched a foot in their homeland. I have a lot of pressure to excel and be someone that my parents dreamed of being. Not only for my dream to make my parents proud but also for their dream. I want them to realize that their thinking and thoughtfulness have significantly impacted my life. In the current day, knowing that the United States border patrol has a strong presence in the country and being around the United States has brought me so much fear. This experience will allow me to give back to my community and be somebody that my parents never had throughout their journey.

As you can imagine, an immersion trip comes with significant financial cost. As a participant, I am responsible for raising money and sharing my experience with friends and family. Money raised goes to the program fees, travel expenses, meals, and logistical aspects of our trips, as well as supporting students in the group who need financial aid to be able to participate. I am creating this to ask for your support. A donation of any size would be appreciated.

Whether or not you are able to support me financially, I'd appreciate your prayerful support during the trip. The prayers will keep us all going and support us spiritually. It is important to me to know that I am not alone on this journey, and there are people who support me and who will join me in spirit. Cada año, la Escuela Preparatoria Jesuita organiza viajes de inmersión para que los estudiantes aprendan y forjen relaciones con personas marginadas. Estos viajes ofrecen a los estudiantes la oportunidad de vivir una experiencia auténtica de servicio, espiritualidad, vida sencilla, comunidad/solidaridad y justicia social.

Este verano, del 21 al 27 de junio de 2025, participaré en una experiencia de inmersión en Nogales, México, y Nogales, Arizona. Nuestro grupo de 10 estudiantes y dos líderes adultos trabajará con la Iniciativa Fronteriza Kino, un ministerio jesuita comprometido con una reforma migratoria humanitaria y con el fomento de la solidaridad binacional mediante la asistencia humanitaria, la educación y la investigación y la defensa de los derechos humanos.

Me llamo Camila Reyes Pérez y actualmente estudio en la Escuela Preparatoria Jesuita en Portland, Oregón. Como hija de padres inmigrantes, he aprendido que todas las dificultades que atravesaron mis padres nos permitieron a mí y a mis hermanos no experimentar las mismas dificultades ni pasar por lo mismo. Los veo como padres poderosos cuando me cuentan su historia de dejar a su familia para emigrar a Estados Unidos en busca de una vida mejor. Me hace llorar. No podría ser como ellos; son tan fuertes y diferentes. Este año se cumplen 22 años desde que no han pisado su tierra natal. Tengo mucha presión para sobresalir y ser alguien con quien mis padres soñaron. No solo por mi sueño de enorgullecerlos, sino también por el suyo. Quiero que se den cuenta de que su reflexión y consideración han tenido un impacto significativo en mi vida. Hoy en día, saber que la patrulla fronteriza de Estados Unidos tiene una fuerte presencia en el país y estar cerca de Estados Unidos me ha generado mucho miedo. Esta experiencia me permitirá retribuir a mi comunidad y ser alguien que mis padres nunca tuvieron durante su viaje.

Como pueden imaginar, un viaje de inmersión tiene un costo financiero significativo. Como participante, soy responsable de recaudar fondos y compartir mi experiencia con amigos y familiares. El dinero recaudado se destina a cubrir las cuotas del programa, los gastos de viaje, las comidas y la logística de nuestros viajes, así como a apoyar a los estudiantes del grupo que necesitan ayuda financiera para participar. Les escribo esto para solicitar su apoyo. Agradecería cualquier donación, independientemente de su tamaño.

Independientemente de si pueden apoyarme económicamente o no, agradecería su apoyo espiritual durante el viaje. Sus oraciones nos ayudarán a seguir adelante y nos apoyarán espiritualmente.
